Surround Yourself with the Angels

Hello family!

As I started my drive home from Holy Family Mission Saturday, I began with the prayer Bob and Penny taught me. I’m not sure if it’s a traditional prayer, I never learned it in school, or maybe they made up, but 23 years later, I am still reciting it whenever I travel (or before children go out Trick or Treating):

Dear Lord Jesus,

We ask you to send all the Guardian Angels to form a protective circle around this (car, home, plane, child etc) with St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael in charge.  Angels and archangels in front of us, in back of us, to the right of us, the left of us, above us, below us. We ask for our Lady of Guadalupe to cover us with her mantilla, Our Lady of Loreto to sit on top of (whatever), and Our Lady of Czestochowa to keep anything away from us that could harm us in any way, physically, spiritually, emotionally or mentally, and bring us safely to our destination so we can glorify your name in everything we say or do. Amen.

There’s such a sense of comfort to know I have angels surrounding me. I’m not sure why, if it’s the images I’ve seen of St. Michael or all the accounts of his presence but I feel especially protected by him from the enemy.

“Michael is famous for rallying the forces of the good Angels against those of the fallen angels. We see paintings of St. Michael hurling them down into the fiery pits of hell. And this great battle that took place before the earth was formed, is still going on. Michael is someone we can call on when we feel the modern day world of Lucifer swallowing up so many good and unsuspecting brothers and sisters. There are times when we feel as if we are walking through a holocaust; chaos and destruction all around us, threatening to envelope us, when suddenly we feel covered by a warm, protective shield. To us, that shield is our St. Michael, given to us by the Lord, to turn to, when things get rough.”

Celebration of a Life

Bob Lord   (in his own words)

 

Bob Lord was born on September 9, 1935 at the Hunts Point Hospital in the Bronx, New York.  He went to St. Athanasius School in the Bronx, and Cardinal Hayes High School, also in the Bronx.  After high school, Bob was drafted into the Army during the Korean War.  He served for two years, after which he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1956.

 

He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York in the fall of 1956.  On September 23, 1957, his life changed when he met Pauline Macaluso (who became Penny Lord) at a birthday party given her by friends from the Academy at Bob’s apartment.  When their eyes met, they were both doomed (joke).  They never took their eyes off each other from that time on.

 

Bob and Penny married in December, 1958. They gave up their dreams to be actors to build a home and a family.  Penny had two children from a previous marriage whom Bob adopted.  They created a paper party goods company, which, while very stylish and popular, couldn’t make it financially.

 

During this time, their son Richard developed a serious case of Asthma.  The area they were living in, Merrick, Long Island, was not good for his condition.  Once, while Bob and Penny were both in Chicago for a trade show, Richard had such a bad attack, he had to be hospitalized and put in an oxygen tank.  Penny rushed back to New York and asked the doctor where would be a place to live where they could control his asthma.  The doctor mentioned two places in the world that would be good for Richard’s asthma.  One was in Africa; the other was in Santa Monica, California.  Guess where they went?

 

On August 26, 1967, their daughter Clare’s birthday, they packed up their meager belongings, left family and friends behind, and moved to Santa Monica, California to start a new life. Clare pouted that she didn’t have a birthday party that year.  But the truth be known, by this time she was married and had a gorgeous baby.  So they didn’t take her too seriously.

 

They closed their manufacturing company, and began working as Manufacturer’s Reps in Southern California.  Their reputation as great sales people, (especially Penny and Clare) preceded them.  They were able to build a good following and their business thrived.

 

Penny received an annulment on her first marriage and Bob and Penny were married in Our Lady of Malibu church by Monsignor John Sheridan on November 29, 1969.  It was the beginning of their lives as full members of the Church.

 

Things were not going as good on the home front.  On October 23, 1971, their son Richard died of a drug overdose.  Bob and Penny grieved a great deal, separately.  They had always done everything in their lives together.  Now, they were separated.  They left the Church, and just went through the motions of life.  Four years later, on New Year’s Eve, 1975, Bob received a word from the Lord.  It was time to go back to church.  This little couple, who had always done everything together except grieve for their son, reunited as a couple and went back to Church.

 

On May 23, 1975, they experienced a Marriage Encounter Weekend, which changed their lives.  They came out of it not only a strong and committed couple, but determined to turn their lives over to Jesus.  They brought Jesus everywhere with them.  At first, their accounts, which had not been used to this part of them, were taken back, but very shortly, they realized that this couple was committed to God. 

 

That year, 1975, the Marriage Encounter community got together, and 2000 couples traveled to Lourdes, France, and to Rome Italy in pilgrimage.  It only cost $500 per person, but Bob and Penny could not afford to go.  When they came back and shared their experiences to those who stayed behind, Bob and Penny vowed that the next year, 1976, they would go on a pilgrimage, no matter what.  Financially, 1976 was not great.  But the age of credit cards was coming into existence, so they financed their first pilgrimage to Europe and the Holy Land on credit.

 

They were like children in a fairy land.  They visited Lourdes, St. Anthony in Padua, and Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, Rome, the Holy Land, Fatima and Paris.  As they were traveling, they found that there were so many more shrines they didn’t get to see. They were so excited by all they had experienced; they decided they would go on pilgrimage every year.

 

For the next four years, this was their plan.  They would work hard all year long.  They would pay up last year’s pilgrimage so they could go on next year’s pilgrimage.  They would study about the shrines they didn’t get to see yet, and map out an itinerary which would bring them to these shrines.  They rented a car, and brought their daughter Clare and their grandson Rob with them.  Not knowing it, this was the beginning of Journeys of Faith, their pilgrimage ministry, and the beginning of their book and television ministry.  They just wanted to marvel at the glory of our Church.

In 1986, the Lord called Penny to have Bob write a book on the Miracles of the Eucharist.  Most Americans had never heard of these Miracles.  After it was published, it was an immediate success.  In the fall of 1986, Mother Angelica of the Eternal Word Television Network in Birmingham, Alabama, invited them on her program to talk about their book.  She was so excited by them, she asked them to make a television series on it.  This was very successful.  They produced many other television series which continue to be aired on EWTN.

 

They continued to write books.  In 1988, a foundation in the Netherlands, asked them to make a TV program on some of the Miracles in Italy.  This was a tremendous hit immediately.  They wanted to make their own programs, but could not afford the equipment.  Brother Joseph, one of our community, was given a grant of $40,000 to buy a good Sony camera.  But when he researched all things, it became prudent to buy a less expensive Sony camera, and use the rest of the money to create an editing suite where they could make their own programs.  In 1992 they adopted Luz Elena Sandoval and Raymond Freyaldenhoven (Brother Joseph).

The Lord put it on Penny’s heart to build a mission, where they could make programs, write their books, have conferences, Days of Recollection, St. Joseph’s Table and on and on.  And when the Lord gave Penny a word, she gave Bob a word, and so for the next 11 years, they searched like Jews wandering in the desert, until the Lord blessed them with 83 acres of prime pasture land in Morrilton, Arkansas, where in 2000, they opened Holy Family Mission.

 

Penny was struck down with an extremely painful cancer in February, 2013.  They fought it all year long, thinking that this would help, or that would cure it, and this big hospital was the place to go.  In the end, the Lord had made His decision, and Penny was taken from Bob on January 21, 2014.    And when Penny goes, Bob goes.  He spent the rest of his life putting things in order, so that the Ministry would continue after they were both gone, and that the family would survive.  As you read this, you become aware that Bob’s biography is really Bob and Penny’s biography as they did everything together for 56 years.

He joined Penny and all the Angels and Saints they had known, on February 13, 2016.

Bob is survived by  his Grandson Rob Ziminsky and his wife Andrea, and their two children Matthew and Mark of Illinois, his daughter Clare Parker, her husband Bobby, and daughter Christiana of South Carolina and his adopted son and daughters, Luz Elena Sandoval-Lord, Raymond Joseph (Brother Joseph) Freyaldenhoven & Blanca Estela Perez of Holy Family Mission in Morrilton, Arkansas.

 His final words, as were those of Penny’s was, “We love you.”

When Will It Stop?

Family, today is the Feast of St. Maria Goretti.  For those of you who don’t know, she was an Italian young girl who chose death rather than give up her virginity.  This took place at the beginning of the 20^th Century.

Penny felt very strongly about Maria Goretti.  She wrote in our book, “Holy Innocence”

“The name of Maria Goretti has a special place for me.  I would judge that most everyone in my generation has grown up having heard the story of the little crimson and white Rose of Jesus, St. Maria Goretti.  Her story inspires such emotions in us, such a desire to bring ourselves to Jesus and His Mother Mary as pure buds, ready to flower into whatever vocation They desire for us, whether it be religious, lay people or as in the case of little Maria, Saints who gave their lives as martyrs rather than stain their immortal souls by committing a sin.  And in that way, Saints like Maria Goretti become role models for young people in these modern times.”

We know the story of Maria Goretti with surface knowledge.  She is famous for what she obviously did, die rather than allow her relationship with Jesus to be compromised by giving into a sexual temptation.  This is the obvious cause for her Sainthood, much as St. Maxmilian Kolbe’s obvious reasoning for Sainthood was taking the place of a fellow prisoner in the death cells of Auschwitz during the Second World War.  But these are only the apparent.  There is so much more to each life which calls for us to venerate them as special servants of God, true role models.”

There were two other virtues of St. Maria Goretti which are so subtle, they get lost in the shadow of giving her life.  One of them was selflessness.  She cared more about her eternal soul than her bodily safety.  And possibly even more than that, she cared about the soul of her attacker more than her own life.  As we get into the woeful story of her life and death, we can’t help but realize that part of the reason for her determination not to give into Alessandro Serenelli was for his salvation.”

Maria Goretti was a good little girl, a pure little girl.  At eleven years old, she had such a love relationship with Jesus that she would rather die than allow her chastity to be compromised, rather die than take a chance on breaking relationship with Jesus.  But how can that be?  How could she possibly understand what path her Yes to Jesus would take her down?  We’re not talking about St. Agnes or St. Cecilia or Saints of the early Church who gave up their lives for Jesus.  This is the Twentieth Century.  She is a product of this century.  Where have we gone, how low have we become, that our young people can’t possibly understand how a girl from their own century could sacrifice her life for her morals?”

Girls as young as eleven, are “sexually active,” have become pregnant, have had abortions often with help of their own mothers, in many instances, and those who did not die on the abortionist’s table, have died of AIDS in many instances.  We’re at a time in our society when there are virtually no morals being taught or practiced either in the classrooms of our schools, or in the homes by the parents of these children.  Our schools are giving children condoms and parents are putting girls on the birth control pill.  We’re being taught safe sex in an effort to avoid the spread of dangerous diseases and to keep the world population down.  Last on the list of priorities is the prevention of the spread of moral decay of a civilization, which in its final analysis will be much more deadly than any physical disease our children may contract.”

When will it stop?

I recall standing with Penny on the stairway of the house where the family lived in Ferriere, Italy, near Nettuno, in the heat of June one year, as we made the program on St. Maria Goretti.  At one point, we stopped talking and just looked out at you, our family.  Finally, I believe it was Penny, who cried out

 “When will it stop?

When will our children stop raping and killing each other?”

Our dear Pope Pius XII, on the occasion of the Canonization of Maria Goretti in 1950, pleaded with our young people to take Maria Goretti as a role model.  He said “

“The concourse of the faithful come here for the occasion, exceeds anything that has ever been witnessed at any other canonization.  You have been lured here, We might almost say, by the entrancing beauty and intoxicating fragrance of this lily mantled with crimson whom We, only a moment ago, had the intense pleasure of inscribing in the roll of the Saints: the sweet little martyr of purity, Maria Goretti.

          “But why, beloved children, have you come here in such countless numbers to assist at her glorification?

          “…why does this story move you even to tears?  Why has Maria Goretti so quickly conquered your hearts, and taken the first place in your affections?

          “The reason is because there is still in this world, apparently sunk and immersed in the worship of pleasure, not only a meager little band of chosen souls who thirst for Heaven and its pure air – but a crowd, nay, an immense multitude on whom the supernatural fragrance of Christian purity exercises an irresistible and reassuring fascination.”

…all of you who are intently listening to Our Words, know that above the unhealthy marshes and filth of the world, stretches an immense heaven of beauty.  It is the heaven which fascinated little Maria; the heaven to which she longed to ascend by the only road that leads there, which is, religion, the love of Christ, and the heroic observance of His commandments.”

          “We greet you, O beautiful and lovable Saint! Martyr on earth and Angel in Heaven, look down from your glory on this people which loves you, which venerates, glorifies and exalts you.”

          “…In you, through Our hands, the children and all the young people will find a safe refuge, trusting that they shall be protected from every contamination, and be able to walk the highways of life with that serenity of spirit and deep joy which is the heritage of those who are pure of heart.  Amen.”

You would think that these inspired words by this Holy Man of God would have an effect on the morals for years to come, not only on those who heard them, but the millions who would read them throughout the world. 

You would think, wouldn’t you?

Unfortunately the situation has escalated since 1950.  There are more rapes reported, and murders due to death than ever before.

When will it stop?

I know I’m preaching to the choir here.  You moms and dads are protecting your children with everything you’ve got.  Pray to St. Maria Goretti.  Ask her to help you inspire your children.  Be aware of the young people your children associate with.  Remember, as they begin to mature, so do their friends.  And I don’t know why it is, but girls from good families often have this strange desire to get involved with “Bad Boys”.  That’s the best word I can use.

Your job is not easy.  But you have help from above.  Pray to Maria Goretti.  Pray to Penny Lord.  They will help you.  We love you!

You have written we must continue to do this.  Our Lord has begun broadening the horizon of our Ministry all over the world.  Brothers and sisters from theUnited Statesto Europe to Africa, Asia,AustraliaandNew Zealandare being given ammunition to fight the enemy!  They have begun to be exposed to the gifts of the Lord which had only been available in our country.

 

Our financial situation is bleak.  We have a new important book to print, and need money to print it.  This book is about our Popes in Hard Times and, like our dear Pope Benedict XVI, the battles they faced.  We need to know that what is happening today has happened before.

Only today, we can join His Holiness and the Church in fighting the battle.

For our children and grandchildren, we must fight the good fight to win.

You have told us how much you love what we are doing!  We need money necessary to continue making programs, writing books, printing the Good Newsletter, as well as formatting our material into the digital formats needed to spread the Good News throughout the world.

You believe in our work.  There is no way we can continue to spread God’s Word over the horizon without your help!  Won’t you once again join the march!  This is the worst of times!  This is the best of times!

As before, we have problems; but we can together, win the fight for Jesus and His Church!  Please donate the best you can.  Be a Production Angel.  Be a monthly donor.  Donate as much as you can whenever you can.  You and your families are in our daily prayers.  May God bless you and keep you.  We need you!  We love you!

The War Is On!

THE WAR IS ON

Family, we are under attack.  Not only our Catholic Church is being attacked, but any ministry connected with the Catholic Church is under attack.  Just today,

YOU TUBE HAS CANCELED ALL VIDEO CLIPS OF BOB AND PENNY LORD.

That means that from now on, you will not be able to access our videos on YouTube.

Being a free service offered by Google, they have the right to terminate you without recourse.

We believe this is just the beginning.  The Powers of Darkness, and all those associated with it, have been attacking Christianity in recent years, and is now accelerating.

With the attack on Catholic and Christian institutions, the gloves have been taken off, and it’s all-out war any Christian organization. 

We must join forces against the enemy.  We must stick together.  Any of you who have been on the fence about what has been happening must make a decision to stand with us, or fall.
